In the discussion of nonhuman races, you mention "enmasca".  In the Darkover books, it is written "emmasca".

I want to identify a particular Darkover novel read long ago, in which a remembered scene and plot does not appear to match any of the synopses published for books in the series.

In this novel a Terran officer seeks an independent matrix technician for some problem, and the technician sees something terrifying in the man's mind and I think even faints.

He was apparently born on Darkover and sent away for some catastrophe in the family which frightens the technician.

The man meets an Alton I think, and travels to Arilinn in an air car.  The city of arillin is introduced for the first time.   He is recruited to fill out ranks in the diminishing comyn population.

There was some resemblance to The Bloody Sun, but I don't recall any Ragan character, and there is no meeting with a technician in that novel, and no aircar trip.

I had thought this novel was Star of Danger, and there is some similarity in presenting Darkover as a mystery to the Terrans in the spaceport, revealing the background in a suspensful way.  But the story I remember involved an older character posessing a matrix similar to The Bloody Sun.  I thought the name might have been Rafe Scott, but that doesn't seem to match anything for that character's description.

Perhaps my memory is just scrambled, but maybe some fan might recall such a story.

Since the last update two weeks ago, several more of the book articles have been regularized, adding a picture of the cover, character lists in some cases.  Still more work of a structural variety as opposed to adding real meat.

Which brings me to the last week where nary a single post or update has been made.  I've spent that time annotating Star of Danger and beginning the same on The Planet Savers.  This all towards actually beginning to add that real meat to some of the bones that have been erected.

Specifically, the entry for the Trailmen (for which 95+% of the information is contained in those two early novels) and the entries for the beginning of the Montray family (Russ, Wade and Larry Montray in specific).  The family plays an inordinately large role in Darkovan history (after the Terrans arrive).  Marjorie Alton is a great-granddaughter of Wade Montray (Wade -> Elaine -> Lew -> Marja).

So, I expect to be quiet for a bit longer as I finish PS.  If there are specific areas that anyone wants soon, please put a request here on the forum.  Otherwise I will continue down my own path.  Of course the very best thing to do is ... join the wiki and start chipping yourself!!!

• Three new templates have been added to add a degree of consistency to similarly themed articles. The templates for publications (Book) and characters are very robust, the template for places is much rougher.

• The number of articles has increased by a third, though sadly the are often "thin", though you might want to check out new The_Darkover_Concordance article.
• The wiki now has an active admin.
• The main page has been spruced a bit.

• Up until a few days ago, there have not been a whole lot of new items on the Darkover wiki ... in the last few years. It has not received tender loving care in quite some time. That is changing. Right now, there is not a whole lot of new information. New pages, yes, but sadly empty of much meat :-(. There will be more new pages and even solid meat in those pages. Soon. (yea, sure, whatev ... ;-)

Obviously, this is one contributor speaking, about what he intends to add. The items that I will add will all concern the "world" of Darkover. It's places, characters, gods, culture and so forth. Information taken from inside the books and stories. The first information will come from those books written solely by Marion Zimmer Bradley, then moving on to books and stories that she co-wrote with others. Final attention will be directed toward the anthology stories published under the DAW imprint (where MZB is not even a co-author, merely editor).

As one contributor, there sure is a lot to do and help would be very welcome. Cheers all!

As the title says, the forum is open.  Right now it has a very default set of boards until such time as there is more activity.  At that point we can change things around to be more suitable.

In the mean time, welcome!
